How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT (2026)

How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT in 2026: four steps for a small or local business
!

Short answer: ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find through its own search crawler and that other websites already talk about. So four things matter: let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, have a clear page that answers the exact question a buyer asks, get your business named on other trusted sites, and keep the same facts everywhere. Nobody can buy a place in the answer.

One of our clients found us this way. He asked ChatGPT for “best digital marketing services for rank in AI assistants”, our site came up, and he got in touch. This guide shows what we know about how that happens, using OpenAI’s own documentation, a study of 75,000 brands and a test you can run on your own site in a minute. Everything here was checked on 19 October 2026.

Why does it matter if ChatGPT recommends you?

Because people now ask it the questions they used to type into Google. A September 2025 study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that ChatGPT had been used by around 10% of the world’s adults by July 2025, and that practical guidance, seeking information and writing make up nearly 80% of conversations. “Which agency should I hire?” and “Who is the best dentist near me?” fall right into that.

An answer to a question like that names a few businesses. If you are not one of them, the person may never see a list of links at all.

How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to name?

ChatGPT has two ways to know about you:

What it is What you can do
Training data What the model learned from the web before its cut-off date Very little in the short term. It changes only when a new model is trained
ChatGPT search A live web search it runs for questions about current or local things, such as “best web designer in Fatehabad” A lot. Let its crawler in, have the right page, and be mentioned on the sites it reads

For “who should I hire” questions, the search side matters most, and that is the part you can work on. OpenAI does not publish how it ranks sources, so be careful with anyone who claims to know the exact formula.

Step 1: Let ChatGPT’s search crawler in

OpenAI runs separate crawlers for separate jobs. The one that matters here is OAI-SearchBot:

OpenAI crawler documentation: sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers

The same page says three more useful things. Blocking GPTBot (the training crawler) is a separate setting, so you can keep your content out of training and still be found in search. OpenAI recommends allowing its published IP ranges as well as the robots.txt rule. And a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its systems.

Many sites block it without knowing. Security plugins, hosting firewalls and CDNs often stop unknown bots, and in July 2025 Cloudflare changed its default to block AI crawlers. Test it yourself. On any computer with a terminal, run this, with your own address:

curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" -A "OAI-SearchBot/1.0; +https://openai.com/searchbot" https://yourwebsite.com/

You want to see 200. A 403 or 429 means something is turning the crawler away. We ran this test on our own site on 19 October 2026: OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and PerplexityBot all got 200.

Step 2: Have a page that answers the buyer’s question

ChatGPT search reads pages and writes its answer from them. If the question is “best website designer in Fatehabad” and your site only has a home page that says “We build digital experiences”, there is nothing for it to quote.

  • Make one page per service and place you want to be recommended for, with the service and the town in the title and the main heading.
  • Open it with a short, plain answer: who you are, what you do, where, for whom, and since when.
  • Add proof that can be checked: client names with permission, real project screenshots, your Google rating and review count, years in business.
  • Answer the questions buyers ask before they call: how long it takes, what it costs or what changes the cost, what is included.

This is the same answer-first writing we explain in our guide to answer engine optimization.

Step 3: Get your business named on other websites

This is the step most businesses skip, and the data says it matters most. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands (published 12 December 2025) and compared different signals with how often each brand showed up in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews:

Signal Link with AI visibility (Spearman correlation)
Mentions on YouTube About 0.74
Brand mentions on other websites 0.66 to 0.71
Links that use the brand name as the link text 0.51 to 0.63
How many people search for the brand name 0.35 to 0.47
Domain Rating 0.27 to 0.33
Number of pages on the site About 0.19
Backlinks Very weak

Two cautions. This shows a link, not a cause: big brands get mentioned more and also show up more. And the study only looked at sites with a Domain Rating above 40, which is bigger than most local businesses. Still, the direction is clear. Being talked about by name counts for more than the number of links or pages you have.

For a small or local business, mentions usually come from:

  1. Directories people use. Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Clutch or GoodFirms for agencies, and the main directory of your own industry.
  2. Reviews in your own customers’ words. A review that says what you did and where (“built our school website in Fatehabad”) gives an answer engine something to repeat.
  3. YouTube. Short videos with your business name in the title, showing real work. Ahrefs counted YouTube mentions only when the brand was in the video title.
  4. Lists and articles by others. Local news, supplier and partner sites, industry “best of” lists, and honest answers on Reddit or Quora where your work is relevant.
  5. Your clients’ websites. A “Website by” credit line in a client’s footer is a real, relevant mention.

Step 4: Keep the same facts everywhere

If your website says one phone number, Justdial another and Facebook a third, a search tool has to guess which one is right, and it may pick a competitor whose details agree. Use one business name, one address, one phone number and one short description of what you do, everywhere. Fix old listings rather than leaving them.

What does not work

Tactic Why it fails
Paying someone for a “guaranteed ChatGPT ranking” OpenAI does not sell places in search answers, so nobody can guarantee one
Fake or bought reviews They break Google’s review rules and read as fake to people too
Stuffing “best agency” into every line It reads as spam to people and adds nothing a search tool can quote
Relying on an llms.txt file alone OpenAI has not said ChatGPT search reads it. The crawler rule is what it documents
Blocking all AI bots “to be safe” Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT search answers

How do you check if it is working?

  1. Ask ChatGPT yourself. Once a month, ask the five questions your buyers would ask, with search on, in a logged-out or temporary chat. Note who gets named and which pages are cited.
  2. Look for the tag in Analytics. OpenAI’s publishers FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its search results. Check that source in Google Analytics.
  3. Ask every new lead. Many people read the answer, then search your name on Google. Analytics will call that a Google visit. Only the person can tell you ChatGPT sent them.

One more check: open your site’s page source and confirm the Google Analytics tag is actually there. A missing tag shows up as zero visits from everywhere, ChatGPT included.

Common questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT search answers are not sold as ad slots, and OpenAI does not offer a paid way to be named in them. Anyone selling a guaranteed ChatGPT ranking is selling something they cannot control.

How does ChatGPT choose which businesses to recommend?

For questions like “best web designer in Fatehabad”, ChatGPT usually runs a web search, reads the pages it finds and writes an answer from them. Businesses with a clear page on the topic and many mentions on other sites have a better chance of being named.

Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?

OpenAI does not publish a list of the sources ChatGPT search reads. Reviews still help, because they are also repeated on directories, maps listings and other sites that search tools do read, and they give a page real proof to quote.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from recommending me?

No. GPTBot is for training. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler for ChatGPT search. OpenAI says the two settings are independent, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.

Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in ChatGPT?

OpenAI has not said that ChatGPT search reads llms.txt. What it does document is OAI-SearchBot: allow it in robots.txt and let its IP ranges through your firewall.

How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me visitors?

OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its search results. In Google Analytics, look under traffic acquisition for that source. Also ask every new lead how they found you, because many people read the answer and then search your name directly.

How long does it take to start showing up in ChatGPT?

Robots.txt changes reach OpenAI’s systems in about 24 hours, according to its crawler documentation. Earning mentions on other sites takes longer, usually a few months of steady work.
