Short answer: YouTube ads have no fixed price in India. They are sold in an auction inside Google Ads, and you set a daily budget in rupees. How you are charged depends on the format: skippable ads charge when someone watches 30 seconds (or the whole ad if shorter) or interacts, in-feed ads charge when someone clicks to watch, and bumper and non-skippable ads charge per impression. Google can spend up to twice your daily budget on a busy day but no more than 30.4 times it in a month, and 18% GST is added.
People ask us two things about YouTube ads: “how do they work?” and “how much will it cost?”. The honest answer to the second is “you decide”, but there are rules that decide how your money is spent, and most small businesses never read them. This guide explains both, using Google’s own help pages, read in full on 26 October 2026.
How do YouTube ads work?
- You upload the ad to YouTube. The ad is a normal YouTube video on your channel, often uploaded as unlisted.
- You run it from Google Ads. YouTube ads are created in a Google Ads account linked to the channel.
- You choose who sees it. Location, language, age, interests, people who searched for related things on Google, your website visitors or your customer list.
- An auction decides each slot. Every time a matching viewer opens YouTube, advertisers compete. Your bid, the quality of your ad and its relevance decide whether yours shows.
- You pay by the format’s rule. Per view, per click to watch or per thousand impressions, as below.
YouTube ad formats and how each one charges you
| Format | What the viewer sees | How you are charged |
|---|---|---|
| Skippable in-stream | Plays before, during or after a video; skip button after 5 seconds | With CPV bidding: when the viewer watches 30 seconds, the whole ad if shorter, or interacts, whichever comes first |
| In-feed video | A thumbnail in search results, next to videos and in the home feed | When someone clicks to watch |
| Non-skippable in-stream | Up to 60 seconds, cannot be skipped | Per impression (Target CPM) |
| Bumper | 5 to 6 seconds, cannot be skipped | Per impression (Target CPM) |
| Shorts | Vertical ads between Shorts | Per impression, view or engagement, depending on the bidding |
The skippable rule is the one most worth knowing, because it means a viewer who skips after 5 seconds costs you nothing on CPV bidding:

One catch on the same page: if a skippable campaign uses Target CPM, Target CPA or Maximize conversions bidding instead of CPV, you pay based on impressions. Check the bidding before you launch.
How much do YouTube ads cost in India?
There is no rate card. The price of a view or an impression comes out of the auction, so it moves with your audience, the season, your competitors and how watchable your ad is. What you do control is the budget, and Google’s rules for it are precise:

Here is what that means for an average daily budget of ₹500, worked out by us from Google’s rules and its India tax page:
| Item | Rule | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Average daily budget | You set it | ₹500 |
| Most Google can spend in one day | 2 times the daily budget | ₹1,000 |
| Most Google can charge in a month | 30.4 times the daily budget | ₹15,200 |
| GST at 18% | On top of the ad spend | ₹2,736 |
| Most you can pay in a month | ₹17,936 |
So a ₹500 daily budget is really a ₹15,200 monthly budget plus GST. Some days spend more, some less, and the month evens out.
GST and TDS on YouTube ads in India
Google’s tax page for India says GST is charged on Google Ads purchases. If you are billed by Google India Private Limited, the rate is 9% CGST plus 9% SGST when your bill-to address is in Haryana, and 18% IGST for other states. Advertisers in a Special Economic Zone pay 0%. A GSTIN is mandatory for business accounts and optional for individuals. The same page gives the TDS rate on advertising payments to Google India Private Limited as 2%, excluding GST, and notes that Google cannot give tax advice, so confirm with your accountant.

YouTube ads vs Demand Gen: what changed
If you used Video action campaigns before, they are gone. Google stopped new Video action campaigns and moved existing ones to Demand Gen, according to its help page on the upgrade. Demand Gen keeps video ads on YouTube and adds Discover, Gmail and the Google Display Network, with image and carousel ads alongside video. For a business that wants leads or sales from YouTube, Demand Gen is now the usual campaign type.
How to set up your first YouTube ad campaign in India
- Add your GSTIN in the Google Ads payments profile before the first invoice.
- Make one short ad. Say who you are and what you offer in the first five seconds; most people can skip after that.
- Upload it to YouTube as unlisted and link the channel to Google Ads.
- Set up conversion tracking for calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks, so you judge the ad by leads, not views.
- Pick the campaign: Demand Gen for leads or sales, a video views campaign for reach.
- Target tightly: your city or a radius, Hindi or English, and people who searched for your service.
- Start with a test budget you can leave alone for two to three weeks, then move money to what brings leads.
Common mistakes to avoid
| Mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Judging the campaign by views | Judge it by leads and cost per lead |
| Brand name and offer at the end of the video | Put them in the first five seconds |
| Thinking the daily budget is the daily cap | Expect up to 2 times on some days; the month is capped at 30.4 times |
| Forgetting GST in the budget | Plan for 18% on top of ad spend |
| No placement exclusions | Exclude kids’ content and poor-fit channels and apps |

Common questions
How much does a YouTube ad cost per view in India?
There is no fixed rate. YouTube ads are sold in an auction, so the price per view depends on who you target, how many other advertisers want the same viewers, and how good your ad is. You choose a daily budget and, with CPV bidding, the most you are willing to pay for a view.
Is there a minimum budget for YouTube ads?
Google lets you set your own average daily budget for each campaign. Start with an amount you are comfortable spending for a few weeks of testing, because a campaign needs some data before you can judge it.
Do I pay GST on YouTube ads in India?
Yes. Google’s tax page for India lists GST at 18%: CGST 9% plus SGST 9% when your bill-to address is in Haryana, and IGST 18% for other states. Add your GSTIN in the payments profile so the invoice carries it.
Do I need a YouTube channel to run YouTube ads?
Yes. The ad is a video uploaded to YouTube, and you link that channel to your Google Ads account. Many businesses upload ad videos as unlisted so they do not clutter the channel.
Can I show YouTube ads only in my city?
Yes. Location targeting in Google Ads can limit ads to a country, state, city or a radius around an address, and you can add language targeting such as Hindi or English.
Which is better, skippable or non-skippable ads?
For most small businesses, skippable ads. With CPV bidding you pay only when someone watches 30 seconds, the whole ad if shorter, or interacts. Non-skippable and bumper ads are paid per impression and suit short brand messages more than leads.
